Pretty Lights @ Asheville Civic Center

Derek Smith dressed up as Bassnectar, and Cory Eberhard as Deadmau5. They opened with High School Art Class. Pretty Lights played the closing night of the festival, from 10:30am to 12:00am.

Moogfest billed Derek with this bio:
Pretty Lights' Derek Vincent Smith has great ears. The Colorado native has become one of the rising stars on the dance rock scene by fusing soul and funk samples with his own electro and dubstep beats. In most hands, that's a train wreck waiting to happen. But Smith's productions are seamless and fluid, jacking the body with bass-heavy hip hop production as the foundation, then layering each well-chosen element carefully to create breathtaking sonic collages. His new EP Spilling Over Every Side continues that sonic mining, this time producing some of his heaviest work to date. And as always, you can head over to his website and download it for free (though do the right thing: make a donation). He veers more towards the mash-up in a live setting - his New Year's Eve gig in Chicago had him melding the Allman Brothers' Midnight Rider with JJ Cale's After Midnight - with powerful and compelling results.
